PolskaÉire 2015

To champion the diversity that Polish people bring to Ireland, PolskaÉire 2015 has been established as a nationwide festival to coincide with the UEFA Republic of Ireland vs. Poland qualifier on the 29th of March.

This initiative is led by the Minister of State for New Communities, Culture and Equality, Aodhán Ó Rí­ordáin T.D. (Department of Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht and Department of Justice and Equality), the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Dublin and the Football Association of Ireland. The festival is supported by Dublin City Council and other local authorities, along with many Polish organisations and cultural, community and sporting groups across the country.

Václav Havel evening

This Friday, 6 March, there will be a musical evening to honour Václav Havel and to raise funds for a bust to be placed in the Irish Parliament. The concert takes place at 7:30 at Odessa.

2015 Festival of Russian Culture

This year's Dublin City Festival of Russian Culture kicked off today with a lunchtime concert in the Hugh Lane Gallery. It runs until next Sunday, 22nd Feb, boasting a varied programme of concerts, talks and film screenings. Full details of events at http://www.russianfestival.ie/.

The Department again contributes several events:

- a talk about studying Russian at TCD/abroad and a quiz "How well do you know Russia?", on Tue 17th Feb, 10-12.30, Ilac library
- a talk in Russian and English about the history of the Bolshoi Theatre by Evgenia Rosato, on Tue 17th Feb, 6-7:30pm, Long Room Hub, TCD

- an Open Day at the Department, on Wed 18th Feb, 4.30-6pm, Room 5051 in the Arts Building, which includes a free tour of TCD
- an evening of poetry and song, on Wed 18th Feb, 7-9pm in the Atrium at TCD.

Next Wednesday is our next regular pub night, and we will repair to Kennedy's after the poetry evening, so the Russian table will start a bit later than usual.

New Václav Havel documentary

The Department, together with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Ireland, invites you to a free screening of a new documentary film on the life and work of Vácav Havel, dissident playwright, philosopher, politician and statesman, and first President of post-Communist Czechoslovakia/the Czech Republic. We are privileged to be able to host one of the very first screenings of this new film outside of the Czech Republic. The film will be shown in in Czech with English subtitles tomorrow night, Wednesday, 10 December, at 7.30 p.m. in the Robert Emmet Theatre, Arts Building. Everyone welcome.

Polish and Russian cinema in Dublin this week

It never rains but pours ...
So, starting today, there are three cinematic events to partake in.

First up, the 9th KINOPOLIS - the Polish Film Festival, running from 6-9 November 2014 at the IFI, screening a selection of feature films (The Word, Papusza, Jack Strong and The Mighty Angel), animated filsm and documentaries by Paweł Łoziński.

Second,  there will be a screening of the Polish film "Ida" organised by the Department in celebration of Poland's Independence Day. The Film night takes place next Tuesday, 11 November, from 7-9pm, in the Museum Building (Room M20) at TCD. The film will be shown in Polish with subtitles, and the screening will be preceded by a short talk by Dr Aneta Stępień.

And finally, tomorrow, Friday, 7th November, the IFI premières the new film 'Leviathan' by Russian filmmaker Zvyagintsev. The film will run through Thursday, 13th November.
