Evening courses still enrolling

The evening courses at the Department are back this week. We have an exciting range of offers, from language courses in Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Polish and Russian, to new lecture courses:

- Contemporary Czech Literature
- Contemporary Bulgarian, Croatian, Polish and Russian Cultures (4 five-week modules which can be taken separately or together)
- Contemporary Literature and Cinema in the European Southeast and the Question of Balkan Identity

Slavonic pub nights resume 5th October 2016

Our by now traditional pub nights take place every second Wednesday during term time in Kennedy's Pub in Western Row near Lincoln Gate.

The dates for the first semester are:

Pub nights start around 8:30-9pm, usually on the ground floor level. The pub takes food orders until about 9:30.

So come along and meet the language assistants, old and new, evening and day students of the Department, during an evening of chats and stories (and maybe some scrabble) in whatever Slavonic language you speak. See you there!

New courses and Central and East European film club starting at the Department

Happy New Year to all our readers!

We are pleased to announce that we are now enrolling for several new language and lecture courses starting the week of 18th January.

- Bulgarian language
- Czech language
- Introduction to Polish Culture
- The Golden Sixties and the Czech New Wave in Film

But that's not all. As a new initiative, we are calling on all you film buffs to join us for our brand-new 

 Central and Eastern European film club

We will have weekly screenings of subtitled films from several of the countries studied in the Department.

Welcome back to the Department and the new (academic) year!

Start of new series of evening courses at the Department

The Department is about to start its new diet of evening courses during the academic year of 2015/16. We offer a large range of language courses in

- Russian (from Beginners to Advanced Plus)
- Polish (from Beginners to Advanced)
- Croatian (from Beginners to Advanced)
- Bulgarian (from Beginners to Advanced)

We will offer Czech again in January.

We also have a number of lecture courses. During the first semester (October-December 2015), we are running

- Cultural History of Soviet and Contemporary Russia: Censorship and Freedom
- Cultures of South-Eastern Europe

while the following are offered during the second semester (January-April 2016)

- Introduction to Polish Culture
- The Golden Sixties and the Czech New Wave in Film

Public IARCEES Lecture 7/5/15, 6pm, Long Room Hub

Tonight the annual conference of the Irish Association for Russian, Central and East European Studies entitled ‘Memories and Identities in Central and Eastern Europe’ starts off with a public lecture by 

Polly Jones (Oxford) on ‘The Many Uses of the Usable Past: Rethinking Revolution(s) in Late Socialism’

Václav Havel evening

This Friday, 6 March, there will be a musical evening to honour Václav Havel and to raise funds for a bust to be placed in the Irish Parliament. The concert takes place at 7:30 at Odessa.

New Václav Havel documentary

The Department, together with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Ireland, invites you to a free screening of a new documentary film on the life and work of Vácav Havel, dissident playwright, philosopher, politician and statesman, and first President of post-Communist Czechoslovakia/the Czech Republic. We are privileged to be able to host one of the very first screenings of this new film outside of the Czech Republic. The film will be shown in in Czech with English subtitles tomorrow night, Wednesday, 10 December, at 7.30 p.m. in the Robert Emmet Theatre, Arts Building. Everyone welcome.

Book Auction + Tea Party

We will be having a book auction as part of the end-of-year Slavonic Tea on Monday, 10th December, at 6.30 pm, in room 4017 (4th floor, Arts Building). All are welcome. If anyone has any Russian, Polish, Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech books they would like to auction, please  bring them along!

It has been a bit quieter over the summer - although the Polish survival course created quite a stir, 

and some thirsty souls have kept the pub night tradition going!

Pub nights take place fortnightly on Wednesdays at Kennedy's pub, near Lincoln Gate and Pearse Street DART station, from 8:30pm. The remaining dates for this semester are 30th November and 14th December.
