2014 Russian Certification Examinations and Intensive Preparatory Course

The Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies, in collaboration with Moscow State University, is an official test centre for Certification Examinations in Russian as a Foreign Language (TORFL/ТРКИ), which are fully integrated into the Common European Framework of Reference. The six examinations that students may take are:

·        (Elementary Certification Level (ТЭУ) – A1)

·        Basic Certification Level (ТБУ) – A2

·        First Certification Level (ТРКИ-1) – B1

·        Second Certification Level (ТРКИ-2) – B2

·        Third Certification Level (ТРКИ-3) – C1

·        Fourth Certification Level (ТРКИ-4) – C2

The 2014 examination diet will take place on Monday, 14^th April 2014, and Tuesday, 15^th April 2014, in Trinity College.

Persons wishing to undergo focused examination preparation for the Certification Examinations are invited to enroll on our special preparatory programme. This intensive course will take place over five evenings from Monday, 7^th April 2014 to Friday, 11^th April 2014, in Trinity College. Students of all levels may apply. 

Each evening, two slots each lasting 60 minutes are available – 6:30-7:30, and 7:45-8:45. Two sessions each are provisionally earmarked for basic level (ТБУ/A2) and for ТРКИ-1 (B1), while four are scheduled for ТРКИ-2 (B2). The two Friday slots are optionally available against additional payment. There must be a minimum of two students per slot; where numbers are lower, sessions may be merged (ТБУ/A2 with ТРКИ-1/B1, and ТРКИ-2/B2 with ТРКИ-3/C1). The final schedule will be made available once registration is complete.

The TCD Russian Society is hosting a recital of Mikhail Scherbakov on March 29, 2014, at 4pm.

Dublin City Festival of Russian Culture

 

The 5th Dublin City Festival or Russian Culture kicks off today at 12 noon at the Hugh Lane Gallery with a concert of classical music. In the course of one week, you can sample Russian culture through a long line-up of events for all ages. The Festival concludes next Sunday, 2nd March, with the traditional Family Day.

The Department is involved with three events this year:

• The now-traditional Quiz for transition-year students and Talk about living in Russia (Tue, 25th Feb, 1pm, Ilac centre library)
• A Gala concert/poetry evening (Wed, 26th Feb, 7pm, Atrium, TCD)
• Open Day at the Department, where we will showcase some of our activities (Fri, 28th Feb, 12 noon-3pm, Rm. 5051, Arts Building, TCD)

As part of the Open Day, the Head of Department will give a short introduction to the Department at 1pm, and we will give a guided tour of Trinity in Russian at 2pm, starting in the Department. Everyone welcome - drop by and put your name on the list!

Pub nights take place in Kennedy's, Westland Row. They start between 8:30 pm and 9:00 pm and go on until the last bus. Come along and chat in Croatian, Polish and Russian, and sometimes in Czech and Bulgarian too.

Introduction to Polish Culture

This course invites participants to discover modern Poland from many perspectives: from historical experience to cultural tradition and artistic innovation. Topics covered include the complex memories of the Second World War, the communist period and the migratory experience, the Jewish and Turkic influences that enrich Poland's culture, the country's folk traditions and its cutting-edge experimental art. Along the way, it examines the work of a wide variety of internationally renowned Polish artists, from the theatrical revolutionaries Grotowski and Kantor to the Oscar-winning filmmakers Wajda and Polański.

The course is intended for a wide audience with a general interest in the countries of Eastern Europe and Poland in particular. The sessions are delivered in English by staff of Trinity College and special guest lecturers.
